Clutch by Lisa Becker | A Book Review

According to this story, men are like bags. And I find the comparison very amusing and very fitting. The author is very clever to come up with this idea. It's amazing. And yes, I did enjoy the story. Thanks again, Lisa W. Becker for the review copy.

For a person who likes bags and at one point, thought that the more I have them, I could have more variety and more choices to choose from. I used to think that it would be amazing to have bags in all colors to match outfits or have a different one whenever you feel like it. I'm not one who buys expensive bags. I used to want to have different styles for versatility. But now, maybe it comes with age, I realized I don't have to change bags as often and I want my bags to last. I realized, I don't need a lot of bags. Just one functional and durable one. And just like in this story, you don't need all these bags but one. One you can hold dear. 

And I guess, it goes the same with men. Unlike the main character in this story, Caroline, who had the luck or the misfortune of meeting these different kinds of men,  depending on how you look at it, I've only been in love three times. I have a lot of guy friends but I never ever thought of comparing them to bags which is a very clever and hilarious idea. I think the closest thing I could compare to having a relationship would be my jobs or the companies I've worked for. I think the explanation is very lengthy, so let's not get into that.  I guess, reading of Caroline's experiences with men is hilarious but if this were real life, it's actually disastrous. Yes, I do admit it's interesting to meet these varied types of men but I prefer not to engage with them knowing all these things from Caroline. I am  good just watching Caroline from the sidelines here. I don't envy her. But having a man and a best friend like Mike in her life is what I covet.

Mike, he's a good sounding board. A very reliable best friend. But the best thing about him is he wants to carve a path of his own even if it's going to be hard. Even if it would mean he could be disowned and not have the comforts and luxuries in his privileged upbringing. Not a lot of guys would have the same strength of character to turn away from that.  I know normally, a lot would bet his life living on dad's money.

Mike and Caroline. I think the reason why these two took a long while to realize they are what each one needs is because they've gotten so used to the idea that they're perfect together as best friends. It never occurred to them that they're perfect for each other more than that because of the bond and experiences they have shared. They are each other's rock. And this is what I liked most about the story. The fact that these two just simply did not see right away that they are just meant to be. It was frustrating having to witness Caroline go through these different dates or relationships and knowing that none of them were bound to last. And after each fall out, Mike was always there to deal with the aftermath. No question. He was always there. It was part of how things are. The ever supportive best friend. Ah, I just love best friends who end up together. I wish the same is true in my life.

The book is very perceptive. Again, I can't stress enough how clever  it is to compare men to purses. And it's a very accurate and very interesting metaphor which every girl could very well relate to and understand. I guess, if you have a friend who have gone through a lot of boyfriends and have not realized that she had been buying the same type of bag, just in different sizes and colors but it wasn't what she needed because it was not functional, poor in quality, and does not suit her needs, letting her read this book will probably make her come to her senses sooner than all those heart to heart talks combined. I think this is a very good book to understand men. I think every girl should read this book. The entertainment value alone is so worth the time.

With that said, I give this book 5/5 clutch bags. Again, this is a hilarious, perceptive, and very educational story. Nothing more to be said except for all of you to read it. I'm so happy that this book was handed to me. 

I don't need to drive you crazy. You're close enough where you can walk there all on your own.

Avenged (Circle of the Red Scorpion #2) by Charlene Johnson | ARC | A Book Review

This is an ARC. I was supposed to post this review in time for the blog tour but was not able to. I got the ARC from the author who reached out to me through the contact us form of this blog. Thank you again Charlene Johnson and Kingston Publishing for the ARC. I am sorry that this review came late but better late than never, right?

This is the second book of the series. I have not read book one but this book is comprehensive enough and is a stand alone. I was still able to keep up with the story even if I have not read the first book. This is a paranormal story where the characters are either half supernatural and half-human or full vampire, etc. There is a mix of supernatural beings here which is interesting. How they came together is all because of Broderick Devereaux. He founded the Circle of the Red Scorpion to bring together other supernatural beings that share his goal to protect humans from the other supernatural creatures who are exploiting humans for their gain. 

I think the best part of this story is its mix of characters. It's varied enough that some of them I haven't encountered in other paranormal stories that I have read. Other important characters that are also in the story are Drake, his mom Elise, and Ebony. Most of the story revolved around these three characters and Broderick. The villain, Solomon, was also very vicious that I ended up hating and wanting to end him myself. I think the author have played and explored his role effectively that I ended up wanting to be the one to put a stake to his heart.  

There were also a lot of revelations in the story that I so did not expect. Some of them were done cleverly while there were some that should have been milked by the author and delivered with great suspense but unfortunately they were not. They were just handed over without a lot of preamble. I would have liked them to have been given more fuss over as they were really astonishing revelations. Aside from that, I have no other complains. Be warned though, like most supernatural adult stories, this one is very steamy and has a lot of sex scenes. So, if you are a bit squeamish and prefers those clean and wholesome reads, then this might not be for you. I think, since most of the characters are half-human half-animal, I was not so particular with the story being clean and wholesome. I understand that the author may have to include those steamy parts.

So, I give this book 3/5 jaguars. I would definitely want to read the next book. The cliffhanger ending was enough for me. It promised that the peace and relief felt by the Devereaux and the Circle of the Red Scorpion is very temporary. Now, another enemy has surfaced bent on disturbing their lives. Let's see how the Circle will find and defeat the enemy this time. I am also excited for Ebony and Drake's twins to be part of the story. I hope they grow fast so they will be active and talking characters in the next installments. 

The constellations of Orion and the giant scorpion represented the battle between good and evil, arrogance and humility, and right and wrong.

Scorpio symbolized the attribute of determination, power, self-reliance, and resourcefulness. The red scorpion of India was the deadliest of its species.

This is the summer camp of horrors story. Instead of having a great and fun summer, it turned out to be a nightmare. Definitely an unforgettable summer. 

What made me sign up for this tour and review this book are the words Grimm and fairy tales. I love fairy tales and I wanted to know what kind of Grimm fairy tale stories are in this book. It turned out it was not what I expected. Really far off the mark. I did agree that most of us have been Disney-fied. I love all things Disney and like what the author said in this book, it allows us to reconnect with our inner kid. I did suspect that a lot of the original versions of the Grimm fairy tales were really grim. That not all of them had happy endings. Because of this book, I now want to read the original versions of the Grimm Brothers' fables. I was also curious about the other tales mentioned in the story that I  am not familiar with. I want to read them all.

True to its form, this story is indeed horrifying. Not the fairy tales we would want to read about. The author definitely did a good job on that front. I think it started very slow like bracing for the inevitable. The author deemed it right to lay out all the characters. Like an introduction-a who's who. I did not know where the story was going. I was starting to wonder how the fairy tales fit in. It felt like the author did not know how to proceed with the next parts. She was like hesitating and then decided to just give it all full blast which was when everything got so interesting. It was like, here goes nothing and fired the machine gun. Yes, the deaths had my eyes bulging and glued to the book. And how the rest of the story unfolded was even  more shocking. The next scenes were so graphic that if this were a movie, I would have had my hands in front of my face and just peek through every once in a while. Good thing, this was not a movie because I think I would definitely have the scenes etched forever in my mind. This is not the way fairy tales should go. But then, the author never intended this to be a happy-ever-after-story. So, I say, read at your own risk. 

The dark past comes back to hunt you. This story is a great example of that. The past is back to collect payments for your transgressions. It's payback time. The story spoke of justice, of revenge, of making amends but in a form of an eye for an eye. Whatever you sow, you shall reap. Whatever form of hurt you cause, you will experience the same torment. This to me felt like a twisted form of justice. Though, I admit, there were times that I would have exactly felt doling out the same hurt that I got to the same people who caused them. But then again, we really don't know what goes on in each person's head. What made them act like that? What were their motivations? Their demons? Like some of the teens here, they have in some way paid for their sins and atoned for them. So, instead of justice served, it turned out to be vengeance even though the intention was to hand out justice. 

I give this book 3/5 arrows. This is one twisted fairy tale and a very good horror story. This would really make a good movie but I won't watch it because I for sure would have nightmares. I'd prefer to read horror stories than watch them in the big screen. In a way, this story shows the hard truths about life and the society. And the reality is some of us are victims of our circumstances. Some, now matter how hard they tried, never seemed to have a way of getting out. They had to live  through the torment and pray for some form of aid or miracle to save them. Some are fortunate and strong enough to get out, survive and make a great life to make up for it. Others, sadly don't. Sometimes, there are just experiences that are too hard to escape from. Some never get out of them alive, others escape with very little of themselves left and are never the same again, in turn view they world in a different way. Exactly what the story is telling us.

Maybe it's not that I never knew my inner kid. Maybe I just don't miss him.

...sometimes we need the bad guy to make us better. Because without a villain, justice lacks its catalyst, and without justice, all you're left with is a world full of outlaws where the wolves eat you alive.

One hacksaw. One hammer, six boxes of nails. Twelve Mason jars, four hunting knives, two pairs of handcuffs. Fifteen gallons of gasoline divided evenly among three dented jerry cans.

It’s time.

A work glove hovered over the table where the objects were laid out side by side and began ticking the air as though marking off an invisible checklist. The chamber reeked of mildew, and the walls had no windows or electrical sockets—no lamps, no wires, no switch covers. A single red candle provided the only light, its crimson wax dripping down its shaft like blood.

The hand picked up a piece of paper from the table and slipped it into a blank envelope. Below, a beetle scuttled across the floorboards. The insect—its gangly antennae tuned to some foul frequency in the gloom—raced past the sole of a giant boot just as a drop of liquid fell through the air and struck it dead center, engulfing its body in a hot, gelatinous blob that filled its orifices and burned it from the inside out. Another droplet tumbled from the candle, plopping onto the envelope this time, and then a brass stamp came down and pressed the wax into a hardened seal.

Drawing in heavier, raspier breaths, the figure held the envelope up to a corkboard that was bolted to the wall. More than a dozen pictures of young men and women were tacked to the panel by their throats and foreheads, smiling in the shadows.

The figure pinned the envelope to the board and stepped back to take in the room again.

The smiling faces.

Now, the figure mused, watching the photographs flicker in the bloodred light. Who’s the nicest, Who’s the worst, who wants to hear a story first?

D. Melhoff was born in a prairie ghost town that few people have heard of and even fewer have visited. While most of his stories are for adults, he also enjoys terrifying younger audiences from time to time, as seen in his series of twisted picture books for children. He credits King, Poe, Hitchcock, Harris, Stoker, and his second-grade school teacher, Mrs. Lake, for turning him to horror.

Sugar and Other Luxuries by Everly Scott | A Book Review

This book is one of those few stories where the lead female character is not confident, does not feel beautiful and has low self-esteem. Not the usual, confident and beautiful leading ladies in most novels. Katherine is curvy and doesn't have abs to die for. She loves to eat, especially scrumptious and velvety soft pastry.

Katherine represents most women who are insecure about their curvy body. In this age where body shaming is as easy as batting an eyelash, weight is still the biggest and most prevalent issue among women. But along with this, a lot of awareness also is spreading that every woman should be confident in her own skin regardless of the numbers on the weighing scale. There are now plus size models. 36-24-36 is no longer that popular. Beauty is relative. There is no exact form or gauge to measure beauty. Physical appearances are deceiving and no matter how advanced society will become, your values and convictions are still all that matters. 

This story is the journey of Katherine of learning to love her body. She believes that of the 7 billion in the world, she's sure that there is at least one man out there who doesn't mind her love handles. This is the same dream everyone woman wants. This is like a modern fairy tale and her fairy godmother is in the form of Hunter, a married woman who has an unusual view of her marriage. 

One thing I noticed in the story is Kath's frenemy. I don't understand why she keeps this kind of friend through the years when all she gets from her are insults and making her feel ugly. I think, she should have dropped her a long time ago. She doesn't need someone who makes her feel bad or gives her negative vibes. I think it took her a while to realize that she doesn't need  a best friend who is always happy to point out her flaws. I think she had let her frenemy walk over her far too long. I always believe that we should remove negative people in our lives. They are not good for our mental health and for the soul.

I give this book 3.5/5 delicious macaroons. Reading this book made my mouth water because of the delightful pastries. I am a pastry-lover also. I am a frustrated pastry chef. My dream is to open my own customized cake shop. Yes, like Buddy Velastro. I still need to do a lot of practice baking.

The Adventures of Natalie Bloom (Bloom Sisters #2) by Brooke Stanton | A Book Review

Since it's December and about 18 days before Christmas, I want to get into the spirit of the season. I decided to take pictures of  books with Christmas ornaments in the background. So, please expect the rest of my posts to be all colorful and Christmasy. 

The Adventures of Natalie Bloom is the sequel to The Misadventures of Catie Bloom. Natalie is Catie's older sister. She is a chef who is trying to open her own restaurant in New York City.

In the first book, I preferred the character of Natalie over Catie. In this book, I wanted to give Natalie a kick in the butt. Just like I wanted to hit Catie over the head to make her see sense in the first book. Natalie, to my surprise and bewilderment, is a very naive, trusting and gullible woman. I wanted so much to shake her to wake her up from her delusions that a friend would never betray her. As they all say, don't mix friendship with money. I guess, Natalie never got that advice from her mom or anyone as she was never any wiser about trusting her business partner with full access to her bank account.

As infuriated as I am with Natalie's naivety, I am happy for her that she was able to travel outside of her comfort zone and in a way learned some things on her own. I think she had to be exposed to a lot of things, mostly to the harsher realities of life so her perspective and her ability to see through people will grow. She really needs to hone her ability to know that some people do smell fishy, not only the fishes she cooks in her kitchen.

As affected as I am with Natalie's adventures, I enjoyed it also. Natalie and Catie are both endearing and the most irritating sisters and characters I have met. They tested my patience, at the same time they made me roll on the floor with laughter and amusement from their crazy antics. I hope these two will finally sort themselves out in the next book.

I give the book 4/5 coconuts. This book took me to the exotic beaches of Panama and to the lush forests of Costa Rica. This was a fun adventure with Natalie, albeit without being robbed and kidnapped. I am still of the opinion that Natalie has to toughen up so she could say no to people who are trying to appear nice and disadvantaged, but in truth are trying to walk all over her.

What a mess my life has become. The man I thought I loved is about to rip my sister's life apart, and the man I trusted with my dreams ripped them to shreds. And when all the pieces land, I'll be left with nothing but a broken heart, an empty dream, and no one to blame but my own pitiful self.

I want to be an independent woman and not need a man. And I don't need a man, but I want one, I want someone to love and be loved by.

Q&A with Brooke Stanton

Tell us a little about yourself. 

When did you decide to become a writer?

I used to keep notebooks filled with short stories starting in middle school. If I’m going to be completely honest they were filled with some pretty risqué stories. I was young and didn’t know much about romance or sex, but my aunt wrote romance novels and I used to sneak and read them, so I tried to emulate her. I didn’t really understand the subject matter. I don’t think I’d even kissed a boy, yet. Once I got to high school, I wrote more mainstream fiction in my spiral notebooks. They were never for anyone to see. Just my own enjoyment. I went to a performing arts high school and funneled my creativity on stage at the time. But I always knew one day I would publish a book.

Why do you write?

I write for the same reason I used to get on stage and sing and act. It’s cathartic. I love diving into different stories and characters. It makes me feel alive.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

To have the freedom to write what I want in many different genres. I hope my readers love my books as much as I love writing them.

What has been the hardest part of building your career?

Being patient!

Which writers inspire you?

Jojo Moyes, Emily Giffin, Meg Cabot. All their stories and characters are interesting and unique and I love how their stories unfold. The love stories feel authentic and there’s always a bit of fun and laughter.

What have you written? (Include books, novellas, short stories, poems, blogs, awards or anything of interest).

My debut novel was the award-winning RomCom, The Misadventures of Catie Bloom. My follow-up novel is The Adventures of Natalie Bloom, which is the second book in the Bloom Sisters series (but can be read as a stand-alone). I have a blog on my website that focuses on my writing career with day-to-day life anecdotes. When I was trying to get preggers, I had a humor blog called Vagina Vacancy. I also contributed to Natural Awakenings magazine and wrote a column for examiner.com.

What inspires your ideas?

Everything! No, really. I never know when an idea is going to hit; I could be on a plane, in a car, watching a movie, reading the newspaper, about to fall asleep. My phone is filled with notes of story ideas. I have at least a dozen. And they will all be written.

Are there any correlations between the books you write and your life experiences?

The Adventures of Natalie Bloom was largely inspired by my yearly trips to Red Frog Beach in Panama. My parents own a place there and it’s a beautiful, unique, inspiring location. The wheels in my head were turning every time I went down there and out of that came this book.

My novel, How to Survive New York on Three Dates a Week (co-written by Corinne Barlow), is the most biographical. Most of the stories are pulled right from our lives. It’s scheduled to be released in early 2018.

All my books have a few anecdotes I took either directly from my life or my friends. If you know me, read carefully…you may find a bit of your life staring back at you!

Do you work from an outline or plot or do you prefer just to see where an idea takes you?

I used to write and see where the story took me. But I found writing for discovery without any kind of outline takes too long. Now I write a short outline before I write any book. It has done wonders for the speed in which I can write a book now. And there’s still a lot to discover, even with an outline.

Tell me about your most recent release.

It’s a romantic adventure about discovering what you and what you’ll do (and won’t do) to get. It’s a bit of romance, adventure, and mystery all tied together. Natalie Bloom discovers to get what she wants she has to fight for it and not be afraid to get hurt…a hard thing to do for all of us.

Is there a message in your novel that you hope readers will grasp? 

I don’t focus on a message as much as I focus on giving my readers something to indulge in, like sneaking a pint of rocky road ice cream and savoring every morsel as it slides down. But the most prominent theme in Natalie Bloom is not letting fear get in the way of living your life – stand up for what you want and go out and get it, no matter what the obstacles.

Any new projects we should look out for?

The third and final book in the series, The Downfall of Catie Bloom, is coming out in the summer of 2017.
