Serenity (Shelby Alexander #1) by Craig A. Hart | A Book Review

Serenity (Shelby Alexander #1) by Craig A. Hart | A Book Review by iamnotabookworm!

Serenity
Shelby Alexander #1
by: Craig A. Hart

Publication date: October 14th 2016

Genres: Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Crime

Do You Love Thrillers? The New Shelby Alexander Thriller Series Is Here! Don't Forget To Breathe... A woman dies in his arms...a drug dealer offers him $10,000...a gunman is determined to kill him. And then everything goes to hell.

Shelby Alexander is an aging ex-boxer and retired fixer, whose activities often flirted with the wrong side of the law. Looking for a little peace and a slower pace of life, he moved to Serenity, the small Michigan town where he grew up. But trouble follows men like Shelby, and he finds himself embroiled in an underworld of drugs and violence that may prove to be his undoing. The first book in the new Shelby Alexander Thriller Series, Serenity is an action-packed read with a lovingly rendered cast, witty dialogue, and a main character who doesn't know when to quit.

I got this  from the  author. He  was  featured in  one of the  newsletters that  I signed  up for. The newsletter said to just email Mr. Hart if I was interested to review his book. And I did and here I am reviewing it. This review just took a while  to come out  because I  only got the  chance to read the book last month.

This is  the first of a series. And of course, my first to read a book by this author. Shelby Alexander  is  obviously  the  main  character in  this story. He is a  retired boxer. This is how, by some unfortunate event, a  dead   body  was  found on  his  yard  to  be  precise, got   him  started  on  being a  private  detective.  Serenity  is the name  of the town  which to me is a contradiction. It is in no way serene. First a dead body, then a  turf  war between  two  drug-dealing cartels. What's serene in that?

I think  I stumbled on a gem. Craig A. Hart is a good find. I was fortunate that I listened to my instincts to sign up to review this book because this was such a suspenseful read. I felt sorry for Shelby being a greenhorn in private investigation and be  constantly  shot  at. He only just started and it seemed like people  are out  to  terminate  him.  Not a  good omen for a starting PI, right?  Not to mention, he did not on his own volition  decide to be a PI.  He was approached to dig and ask around to find the killer of the dead boy and how it ended up on his property. What's more, he  is now  in close  contact  with  very   shady  characters. The  very same  people who  trusted  him  to   find  the   people   responsible  for  the  death of their sister. Yes, the  dead body in his yard was the sister of the major drug-dealing family  in  Serenity. With  the  danger  he  is  in  becoming  more real  and  deadlier, Shelby  used  the  resources available to him, like his girl friend who works at a bar and a friend who is not from Serenity.

In the end, it turned out a lot of interests are playing this deadly game. Selfish, very deadly and high stakes are involved and Shelby has to outwit the unknown and faceless enemy to stay alive and save those that are caught in the crossfire.

I give this 4/5 one-cup coffee makers. Though, this was kind of melancholy and dark, I enjoyed reading this book. Mr. Hart is shaping up to be one really good mystery writer. And my favorite author's list has a  lot of  space  for more   mystery  writers  since it's  my favorite  genre. I am  looking  forward to read Serenity Avenged. Another book of  the same   author and also part  of this series. What  other deadly situations will Mr. Alexander get entangled in?

Thank you Mr. Hart for this  worthwhile read.  Looking  forward  to reading  more of  your books, whether in this same genre or not.

There was a hunger inside humanity, a craving for conflict. It was how it pulled itself out of the ooze and rose to rule the planet. It was biology.

Help the Poor Struggler (Richard Jury #6) by Martha Grimes | A Book Review

Help the Poor Struggler by Martha Grimes | A Book Review iamnotabookworm

It's been years since I last read a Martha Grimes book. As far as I can remember, the last I read was The Five Bells and Bladebone (Richard Jury #9). I can't exactly remember the first story of the author that I read. As I scanned through the titles of her books, only The Five Bells and Bladebone was familiar. It may seem that I have only read two of her books but I felt like I had been reading her works a lot more than that. As far as I can remember, I may have met the the author through an issue of The Reader's Digest Condensed Books. I have enjoyed her books so much that she had been on my favorite authors list.

As I noticed, Martha Grimes has a penchant for naming her books uniquely. For this book for example, I kept asking when will she reveal why she called this Help the Poor Struggler. I was so curious why and fortunately, it was explained almost on the last of the story. I was actually surprised where the title came from but it did make a lot of sense and in fact summarized the whole plot. I think one of the reasons why I got drawn to her was because of her very intriguing titles. And her writing is very suspenseful and riveting that you will keep wanting to read her books. Finding her books in a second-hand bookstore is like a discovering a treasure. I made sure that I hold on to the copy very tightly so no one could take it.

I didn't realize that most of the author's books or almost all are part of the Richard Jury series. I didn't event realize it's a series. It only dawned on me now. Richard Jury is a Scotland Yard detective and is the main character in this story. In here, Jury is asked to help solve a series of murders of three kids.

As the story progressed, I started to have my list of suspects and started eliminating them as soon as it was proven wrong. When all of the names on my list have been eliminated but one, I started having doubts if my hunch was correct. I was unsure until the true murderer was revealed. I was astonished because my hunch was correct but I had my doubts. The author's writing was just so unexpected and things were so uncertain until they slowly unraveled. It seemed that things could go any way possible. Anything can happen. I was really riveted to how Jury tried to leave no stone unturned. In the end, his instincts and keen attention to details paid off. He caught the killer and removed suspicion on the person who was purported to be doing all the killings.

This was a superbly done story and the suspense and uncertainty was almost too hard to take. This was pure good old-school detective work at its best. I give the book 5/5 mugs of beer. This book just reminded me of why I came to love suspense, mystery and thrillers.

I seem to not find any marked page or highlighted lines in my paperback of this book. So, Instead of the usual quote from the book, let me just give you an observation or trivia. It seemed that this book happen have a lot of covers. Per Wikipedia, a movie (in behalf of Austrian and German broadcasters) has also been made based on this story and two other stories by the same author such as The Man with a Load of Mischief and The Deer Leap.

Murder at Capitol Hill (Capital Crimes #2) by Margaret Truman | A Book Review

Murder at Capitol Hill by Margaret Truman | A Book Review by iamnotabookworm

I found this book at a second hand bookstore in a mall here in Cebu. I have read books of Margaret Truman before and they were similar to this one. They were all about politicians in DC. I think these kind of stories are Margaret Truman's specialty. By the way, Margaret Truman is the daughter of former US President Harry S. Truman. Just so you know. :)

What is in this story?
A dead senator. A lot of suspects. A shady religious cult who is accused of brainwashing its members to keep them. A female defense lawyer as a protagonist. A very nosy radio announcer. An unsolved murder that might or may not be related to the case but the victim was related to the senator. Add in a few more people with their own motives and agendas. All these make for a very chaotic and big mess. The only way to solve the case is to check each possible angle without dismissing any single thing, no matter how tiny that might have any relevance or shed light to the case.

Margaret Truman's insider knowledge of DC is shining through here. No one does it like her. The classic question of who has done it lives in every page. It seemed like everyone could be a suspect but the real culprit is never ever obvious. You have to read the whole book to find out and be astonished in the revelation. This is definitely one of those mind-boggling crime mysteries I have read. The suspect I had in mind was not the real killer. If there were clues as to who has done it, they were so subtle that even I, a self-proclaimed mystery, thriller and suspense junkie had missed them. Which means, the author is at the top of her game. I am happy to be told that my hunch was wrong. I love that the story is so unpredictable. The best thing about mysteries is to never know what's coming. To surprise and to bewilder both the suspicious and the unsuspecting reader.

I give the book 4/5 video tapes. This is a classic case of leave no stone un-turned. The puzzle has to be solved by connecting the pieces one at a time. Unraveling the secrets bit by bit. This is one good old-fashioned mystery in its finest. This story reminds me why I was so drawn into this genre. I think most of the books I have read is composed of 50% of this genre. When YA was not yet the thing, this was my default setting for stories to read. It was like second nature to me to hunt for these kind of stories. I live for these kind of stories.

I admire people who demand the truth, even if they are annoying.

A Ghostly Mortality

That ghost sure looks . . . familiar

Only a handful of people know that Emma Lee Raines, proprietor of a small-town Kentucky funeral home, is a “Betweener.” She helps ghosts stuck between here and the ever-after—murdered ghosts. Once Emma Lee gets them justice they can cross over to the great beyond.

But Emma Lee’s own sister refuses to believe in her special ability. In fact, the Raines sisters have barely gotten along since Charlotte Rae left the family business for the competition. After a doozy of an argument, Emma Lee is relieved to see Charlotte Rae back home to make nice. Until she realizes her usually snorting, sarcastic, family-ditching sister is a... ghost.

Charlotte Rae has no earthly idea who murdered her or why. With her heart in tatters, Emma Lee relies more than ever on her sexy beau, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross…because this time, catching a killer means the Raine's sisters will have to make peace with each other first.

A Ghostly Mortality by Tonya Kappes | Blog Tour | Book Review by iamnotabookworm

I had been out of circulation for more than a week. No reviews or any bookstagram posts. This review was supposed to be due March 10th but I was unable to because I was sick and my laptop went berserk. Good thing, the blog tour is still until March 30th so this review will still make it. Again, I apologize to Tonya Kappes and PICT for not being able to post on my promised date.

Book 5 --A Ghostly Reunion, ended with a cliffhanger and a capital OMG. I was glad I also signed up for the blog tour for this book. I just couldn't wait to know what happens next and what ghostly and deadly adventures await our heroine Emma Lee.

Did I say OMG? OMG! This is definitely the best so far of all the Tonya Kappes books, though this was only my second.  A lot of things are going on in this story but it was not at all confusing or hard to follow. The elements all worked together to make the story more engaging and suspenseful. There was no way I was able to predict what is going to happen next and who was responsible for the murder. It was so surprising and exhilarating to find that the story resolved and ended without any of my theories being right. I was happy and I enjoyed the surprise with a big "Oh" when revelation time came.

What can't be missed in this story is the usual funny and witty banter between Emma Lee and the current in-betweener. This is one of the things I liked in the series. The comedic conversations were hard to pass up. They add character and color to the story and the whole series. I could say, this is one of the characteristics that separates Emma Lee from all the other heroines, aside from her very unusual talent for seeing and conversing with the dead.

I give this 5/5 cute white cats. True to Tonya Kappes fashion, there was a preview of what the next installment would be about. It hinted of Emma Lee's talent evolving and getting more intense. Apart from the unyielding suspense throughout, the story also took on an emotional route. It perfectly captured the emotions of losing a loved one unexpectedly and tragically. In here, it was so raw because it was Emma Lee herself who get to experience those heartbreaking and painful emotions. It hit so close to home for our heroine. I felt her dilemma between grieving and at the same time keeping it in because she has to find the cause and who caused the deed. When all was done, there was also that mixed feeling of relief that finally she has solved the murder and the restless soul would now be at peace, at the same time not wanting to let the ghost go. For the unending pain of longing and missing for that loved one to finally descend and take a place in her heart because she will never get to see that loved one again. I just can't help but get teary-eyed as well. This was very nicely done and Tonya Kappes has a good chance of making it into my favorite authors's list if this book were any basis. Bravo! I just need to read about two more books to really decide.

I guess death is just like the seasons. Winter kills things and spring brings life.

Review of other books by Tonya Kappes:

Lawdy bee.” Granny scooted to the edge of the chair and lifted her arms in the air like she was worshiping in the Sunday morning service at Sleepy Hollow Baptist and the spirit just got put in her.

I sucked in a deep breath, preparing myself for whatever was going to come out of Zula Fae Raines Payne’s mouth, my granny. She was a ball of southern spitfire in her five-foot-four-inch frame topped off with bright red hair that I wasn’t sure was real or out of a L’Oréal bottle she’d gotten down at the Buy-N-Fly.

“Please, please, please,” she begged. “Let me die before anything happens to Emma Lee.” Her body slid down the fancy, high-back mahogany leather chair as she fell to her knees with her hands clasped together, bringing them back up in the air as she pleaded to the Big Guy in the sky. “I’m begging you.”

“Are you nuts?” My voice faded to a hushed stillness. I glanced back at the closed door of my sister’s new office, in fear she was going to walk in and see Granny acting up. I sat in the other fancy, high-back mahogany leather chair next to Granny’s and grabbed her by the loose skin of her underarm. “Get back up on this chair before Charlotte Rae gets back in here and sees you acting like a fool.”

“What?” Granny quirked her eyebrows questioningly as if her behavior was normal. My head dropped along with my jaw in the “are you kidding me” look.

“Well, I ain’t lying!” She spat, “I do hope and pray you are the granddaughter that will be doing my funeral, unless you get a flare up of the ‘Funeral Trauma.’ ” She sucked in a deep breath and got up off her knees. She ran her bony fingers down the front of her cream sweater to smooth out any wrinkles so she’d be presentable like a good southern woman, forgetting she was just on her knees begging for mercy.

“Flare up?” I sighed with exasperation. “It’s not like arthritis.”

The “Funeral Trauma.” It was true. I was diagnosed with the “Funeral Trauma” after a decorative plastic Santa fell off the roof of Artie’s Meat and Deli, knocking me flat out cold and now I could see dead people. I had told Doc Clyde I was having some sort of hallucinations and seeing dead people, but he insisted I had been in the funeral business a little too long and seeing corpses all of my life had brought on the trauma. Truthfully, the Santa had given me a gift. Not a gift you’d expect Santa to give you, but it was the gift of seeing clients of Eternal Slumber, my family’s funeral home business where I was the undertaker. Some family business. Anyway, a psychic told me I was now a Betweener. I helped people who were stuck between here and the ever after. The Great Beyond. The Big Guy in the sky. One catch . . . the dead people I saw were murdered and they needed me to help them solve their murder before they could cross over.

“I’m fine,” I huffed and took the pamphlet off of Charlotte Rae’s desk, keeping my gift to myself. The only people who knew were me, the psychic and Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, my hot, hunky and sexy boyfriend. He was as handy as a pocket on a shirt when it came time for me to find a killer when a ghost was following me around. “We are here to get her to sign my papers and talk about this sideboard issue once and for all.” Granny stared at me.

My head slid forward like a turtle and I popped my eyes open.

“I’m fine,” I said through closed teeth.

“You are not fine.” Granny rolled her eyes so big, I swear she probably hurt herself. “People are still going around talking about how you talk to yourself.” She shook her finger at me. “If you don’t watch it, you are going to be committed. Surrounded by padded walls. Then—She jabbed her finger on my arm. I swatted her away with the pamphlet.

“Charlotte Rae will have full control over my dead body and I don’t want someone celebrating a wedding while I lay corpse in the next room. Lawdy bee,” Granny griped. I opened the pamphlet and tried to ignore Granny as best I could.

“Do you hear me, Emma Lee?” Granny asked. I could feel her beady eyes boring into me.

“Don’t you be disrespecting your elders. I asked you a question,” she warned when I didn’t immediately answer her question.

“Granny.” I placed the brochure in my lap and reminded myself to remain calm. Something I did often when it came to my granny. “I hear you. Don’t you worry about a thing. By the time you get ready to die, they will have you in the nut-house alongside me,” I joked, knowing it would get her goat. The door flung open and the click of Charlotte Rae’s high-dollar heels tapped the hardwood floor as she sashayed her way back into her office. The soft linen green suit complemented Charlotte’s sparkly green eyes and the chocolate scarf that was neatly tied around her neck. It was the perfect shade of brown to go with her long red hair and pale skin.

“I’m so sorry about that.” She stopped next to our chairs and looked between me and Granny. She shook the long, loose curls over her shoulders. “What? What is wrong, now?”

“Granny is all worried I’m going to get sent away to the nuthouse and you are going to lay her out here.” The words tumbled out of my mouth before I could stop them. Or did my subconscious take over my mouth? It was always a competition between me and Charlotte, only it was one-sided. Mine. Charlotte never viewed me as competition because she railroaded me all my life. Like now. She’d left Eternal Slumber with zero guilt, leaving me in charge so she could make more money at Hardgrove’s Legacy Center, formerly known as Hardgrove’s Funeral Homes until they got too big for their britches and decided to host every life event possible just to make more money.

Death Unmasked by Rick Sulik | A Book Review

Death Unmasked by Rick Sulik | A Book Review by iamnotabookworm

The author of this book sent me a message last December 2016 through this blog asking if I wanted to review this book. I read the blurb and agreed. I love reading detective stories, crime and mysteries so this book is right up my alley.

I have not heard of Rick Sulik before he messaged me. This story is a mix of crime with verses of poetry thrown in the right places and of superstition. This story talked about reincarnation, past lives, and retribution for the wrongs done in the previous lives. It touched on karma. The sins of past ultimately have a way of catching up to make amends.

At first, the style of writing threw me a bit but eventually, I got used to it. The mix of reincarnation in the plot was a really good surprise. It gave the story a different and distinct flavor. I love happy endings and righting wrongs so I was really rooting for Sean Jamison to find the killer and make him pay for all the crimes he has committed. And to finally be reunited with his long-lost beloved Laura. I liked how the story ended.

My only concern was the story started a bit slow and I think it took a bit for the past and the present to converge. But the author made up for it when everything was thoroughly explained near the end.

I give the book 3.5/5 red coats. The reincarnation bit was really fascinating. I wish in real life we could remember a few things in our past lives to at least understand a part of ourselves. I would love to remember who I was and what happened to me in my former lives if reincarnation were true. And if there is that one person for me like Laura and Sean, I too would want to find that same person in this life.

...why would a perfectly healthy individual commit suicide while a terminal cancer patient fights to survive every day?

Searching for Gatsby (Ronnie Lake Mystery #3) by Niki Danforth | A Book Review

Searching for Gatsby (Ronnie Lake Mystery #3) by Niki Danforth | A Book Review by iamnotabookworm

This is my second time to read a Niki Danforth novel. The first time, I had a slight concern because the copy I got seemed to have been a condensed one. Fortunately, this time, this one is a full-length version. I was sent an email asking if I wanted to review this one since I seemed to have enjoyed the second book. Good thing I agreed because this was a really entertaining story.

This is the third book in the series. I had not read the first book but each story is different from each one. This third installment is about mysterious first book editions. The hero in this story, Ronnie Lake is a novice PI. She is like my favorite sleuth Mrs. Pollifax. The circumstances that pushed them to pursue a career in crime detecting or solving mysteries has something to do with the new chapters in their lives. Ronnie, just gotten divorced and is still dealing with the loss of his son, who was a soldier sent to Afghanistan. Mrs. Pollifax and Ronnie Lake, both wanted to do something they have not done before and they are both past their prime. Ronnie is in her fifties. If you are curious about who Mrs. Pollifax is, then you can refer to the following posts. Believe me, she is one amazing woman. You will definitely be addicted to her adventures.

  1. The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax
  2. Mrs. Pollifax on Safari
  3. Mrs. Pollifax on the China Station
Back to Searching for Gatsby. The title may not be obvious but it actually says a lot about what the story is about. It is literally searching for Gatsby. A first edition of The Great Gatsby. A unique edition issued to soldiers during the war.

I think of the two books I have read, this is the more engrossing and exciting one. This involved a lot of suspicious characters and will have you reeling who really is the culprit. Who is guilty? This story will have you theorizing and formulating your own hypothesis and come up with possible suspects. You will be so involved in this story that when the bad guy is caught you will also feel relieved.

I give this book 4/5 old covers of The Great Gatsby. I am looking forward to the next assignments of Ronnie Lake. I actually like that the titles of the two stories. They are really catchy. The both pertain to very popular things. I hope the next book would also sport a very intriguing title.

...how well do you know anyone? You can think you do, and still, sometimes the nicest people turn out to be sociopaths.

A Ghostly Reunion by Tonya Kappes | Blog Tour | Book Review iamnotabookworm

This is my first time to read a Tonya Kappes. Though this is a series, it was not hard to get into the story. There was enough information as to how the story evolved or what the series is about. This could be read as a stand alone.

This story was set in Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky. Yes, the same movie or book that had a headless horseman roaming at night. I think it is aptly set in this small town with the same name since this book talked about supernatural occurrences as well. Ghosts. Or as our main character, Emma Lee calls them in-betweener clients.

Emma Lee is the director of their family-owned funeral parlor. This was managed before by his grandma and parents and now has been passed on to her and her sister after they retired. Her sister, Charlotte Rae, left her and the business to join another funeral parlor right after Emma Lee found that she had a gift. She can see dead people --but only those that had been murdered. Now it is up to her to help them cross over by finding their killers. In this story, it turned out that her arch nemesis in high school, the girl who bullied her was murdered before their reunion. Would Emma Lee help Jade Lee Peel cross over into the light?

My first observation was the two-word names. Is this one of the southern charms because it is really cute but just a mouthful. It was just the first thing that struck me when I started this book. I actually liked it. It gives a hint of uniqueness and identity to the story. And if it is really part of the southern charm, then it had stayed through to its setting.

I enjoyed the story. It was straight forward and what I liked most about is was that I was not able to identify the killer. I had no clue which is really really good. I liked that it had me guessing until I can't help but wait for the final reveal of the culprit. This mystery story was so well-written. I was not able to formulate any theories or hypothesis about who the killer is. I just followed the story until the final conclusion. It seemed that all people who spoke to Jade Lee Peel was a suspect but there was not evidence to go by. Hmmm...

Aside from how the story was woven with enough suspense and mystery to get anyone hooked, I also liked the hodgepodge of eccentric characters which added to its charm. Emma Lee, her sister and her grandma have a very interesting and hilarious relationship. Emma Lee's friends or bullies from high school were an even curious breed of personalities. Add in all the other hosts of personalities in their town and those that were not from it. It was all a conglomeration of distinct individuals that have added to the colorful mixture and hue to the story.

The conversations also were funny. Not to mention the conversations of Emma Lee with the ghost of Jade Lee Peel. Imagine the dialog of these two who had never seen eye-to-eye when the other one was alive. Ghost Jade Lee Peel and Emma Lee's conversation were to watch out for. And I just noticed, these two even have the same middle names. I wonder if the author intended this? Or if the characters were even aware of this?

I give the book 4/5 glasses of southern sweet tea. For a crime mystery, this was a light read. It was amusing because of the smart and feisty dialogs and because of the supernatural aspect. This is a breath of fresh air for this kind of genre. I am looking forward to reading the next book and the rest of the previous books in the series. Nice to meet you, Tonya Kappes.

Sexy isn’t a firm fanny in a thong, ladies.”

Hettie Bell didn’t seem so sexy in her hot pink leggings and matching top as she gasped for breath in her downward dog position in the middle of Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky. Her butt stuck straight up in the air, right there on display for everyone to see. Her black, chin-length bob was falling out of the small ponytail on both sides and her bangs hung down in her eyes.

“Sexy is confidence and self-acceptance. It’s exactly what yoga provides.”

Hettie Bell curled up on her tiptoes with her palms planted on one of the mats she provided for us. The rickety old floor of the gazebo, in the middle of the town square, groaned as we all tried to mimic her pose. “Yes!” Beulah Paige Bellefry hollered out like we were in the first pew of the Sleepy Hollow Baptist Church getting a good Bible beating from Pastor Brown himself.

“Amen to a good pose!”

Beulah continued to adjust her feet and hands each time she started to slip. If she wasn’t a bit overweight, I’d say it was her eighties silk sweat suit that was slicker than cat’s guts giving her problems. Or it could’ve been those pearls around her wrist, neck and ears weighing her down. Beulah never took off those pearls. She said pearls were a staple for a Southern gal.

“You said it, sister,” Mary Anna Hardy gasped. She teetered side to side, nearly knocking into Granny. Her sweat left streaks down her makeup. Who on earth got up this early and put makeup on to do yoga? Mary Anna Hardy, that’s who.

“God help us!”

“That’s it.”

I pushed back off my heels and crossed my legs, staring at all the Auxiliary women’s derrieres at my eye level.

“I’m here to do some relaxing, not Sunday school.”

Sleepy Hollow was smack-dab in the middle of the Bible Belt and if God wasn’t thrown in our conversations, then we weren’t breathing. But the last thing I wanted to think about was my butt stuck up to the high heavens and everyone up in the Great Beyond looking down upon me.

Synopsis:

The Fixer: The Naked Man by Jill Amy Rosenblatt
“Katerina—I need some help. Be a good girl and come over here and I’ll make it worth your while.”

It’s an offer NYC college student Katerina Mills should refuse. But how can she?

A desperate situation….

After ditching her cheating lover (and boss), she’s stuck in dead end temp jobs. Her dad just ditched her mom and his promise to pay Kat's college tuition bill.

She has two weeks to come up with $14,000 or she's out of her apartment, out of school, and out of luck.

A dangerous world….

Katerina falls into a job as a "fixer” for New York City's wealthy and privileged men. They have problems they need “fixed,” quick and on the QT, and they’re willing to pay.

The rules are simple: collect the money, use your contacts, fix the problem.

Kat's first job is easy: tail a shopaholic socialite wife. But who’s tailing Kat?

Kat’s second job is not so easy: steal a VHS tape hidden in an antique chest. She can’t do it alone. To be a thief, she needs a thief: handsome, reclusive Alexander Winter to be exact.

Kat soon learns the real rules for a fixer: there are no rules, there are no refunds. Get in. Get results. Get gone.

As every step brings her closer to her goal and closer to danger, there’s one rule left for Katerina Mills to learn: once you’re in, there’s no getting out.

CHAPTER 1

“Katrina, I need help.”
Katerina stumbled out of bed, her cell phone slipping from her hand.
“Damn it,” she muttered. Fumbling for the lamp, she snapped it on, blinking several times against the harsh light. She heard the low tone of the man’s voice, now coming from under the bed. Even from a distance he sounded frightened and hysterical.
“Katrina? Katrina?”
Bending over the side of the bed, her long chestnut hair cascading onto the floor, she groped for her phone. She grabbed it, bringing it to her ear.
“This is Katerina. Who is this?”
“Katr—, it’s Joe Lessing. I’m a friend of Phil’s. You remember me, right?”
Kat worked to match the voice to a face. After a moment, the film of sleep dropped away. Medium height. Built like a boxer. Strong jaw. Black hair with a widow’s peak.
“Yes, Mr. Lessing. How can I help you?”
She listened to Joe Lessing's labored breathing at the other end of the phone; he sounded like he had just come in from a brisk jog. The clock radio read twelve-thirty. It was a little late for a run around the reservoir.
“I can’t find Phil. Do you know where he is?”
“No, I’m sorry, I don’t.”
“He’s not answering his cell phone.”
“Mr. Lessing, I don’t work for Mr. Castle anymore. Maybe his current assistant can help you—”
“Shit! Shit!” Lessing's voice rose. “SHIT!”
“Mr. Lessing—”
“Listen, Katri—Katerina—I need some help. Be a good girl and come over here and I’ll make it worth your while. Okay?”
Katerina answered with silence. She had met Joe Lessing maybe three times when she worked for Philip. He never struck her as a crazed, rapist murderer…until now. Not a good idea, she thought. Whatever this is, I don't need it.
“Look, this is on the level. I’m in some shit here and I need a little help. It’s worth a thousand dollars.”
That I do need. Desperately. “Okay…twenty minutes.”
“Make it ten. It’s a matter of life or death.”
“Which is it?”
“I’m not sure.” He gave his address and hung up.
Kat considered his comment and then threw on a pair of jeans, a sweatshirt, and laced into a pair of ankle boots. She twisted her mass of hair into a sloppy braid. Stuffing some cash, ID, cellphone, and her trusty pepper spray in her pockets, she rushed out into the brisk New York City night. Against her better judgment, she took the subway. But, if there should be a police investigation, a cabbie, overeager to cooperate, would be a liability. In one of his many moments of ego and hubris, Philip had bragged about his golden rule of “fixing” people’s problems: get in, get out, get gone. Don’t linger. See everything but never be seen.
Keeping alert for drunkards, creepers, and other assorted predators lying in wait, she kept one hand in her pocket, her finger on the button of the palm-sized can of pepper spray.
She found Lessing's building. She glanced up, the bite of the chilly October night air making her give a quick, involuntary shiver. She pushed the call box button.
“Who is it?” Lessing sounded apprehensive.
Who do you think it is? “Katerina.”
The buzzer rang. Kat slipped inside.
She found the apartment door ajar. She inched inside. A colorful Persian rug covered most of the foyer. Examining the bright pattern of red, blue, and black and finding no sign of blood, she relaxed. She took tentative steps inside, scanning the living room. Everything was neat and in order.
“Mr. Lessing?” she said.
“In here,” he called from the end of the hallway.
Kat hesitated. Move ahead or turn back? She crept down the narrow space lined with modern art consisting of colorful paint splatters. The door was open.
Kat peered inside and saw Joe Lessing, a man in his forties, his overdeveloped muscular build now turning fleshy and soft. He was naked, pacing, and breathing hard. His flaccid penis, dangling like an oversized rotini, bobbed and swayed with every step.
Katerina froze. Oh shit.
He turned to look at Kat; she saw the panic in his dark eyes.
“Thank God you're here,” he said, turning to the bed. It was a massive four poster with a distressed wooden chest squatting at its foot. A Queen Anne style night stand on each side held a Tiffany lamp. But it was the unconscious, naked blonde woman lying on top of the rumpled covers that grabbed Kat's attention.
“I called someone. She said she would try to get here but I can't wait anymore.” He pointed at the bed. “Can you help me, please.”
Kat didn't know what to say to him. When he had come to Philip's office he was always calm and relaxed… and fully dressed. He liked perching on the edge of her desk and talking about his motorcycle, his house in the Hamptons, and his wife.
His wife.
“What happened?” she asked.
“I don’t know,” he said in a shaky voice. “I don’t know but I have to do something. We have to do something.”
He returned to mindless pacing and the penis began dancing again. Kat moved to the bed. The woman had bottle blond hair, a too perfect nose, but her breasts were real, her waist a size zero. Kat leaned over and touched her cheek. Warm.
“I'm fucked, aren't I?” he asked, wiping sweat off his brow. “Am I fucked?”
“She has a pulse,” Kat said.
“Thank Christ,” Lessing said.
“Have you tried waking her?”
“Of course I did! Nothing works!”
“What happened?”
Joe scratched his head like he was trying to work out a difficult math problem. “We were going at it and it was good—shit, it was great—and then she collapsed. Look, we have to get her the hell out of here.”
“When is your wife due, Mr. Lessing?”
Joe gave a short, guilty laugh. “She’s taking a night flight from LAX. She’ll be here soon.”
“What's soon?”
Lessing's eyes met hers. “Less than two hours.”
Shit.
“Your —friend needs medical care.”
“I can’t take her to the hospital. No one can know about this. Her husband would be very upset.”
And your wife. “I understand.”
“Please, you work for Phil—or you worked for him—whatever. You know people. You can work this out for me, right? You have to make this—” he said, pointing in the general direction of the bed, “go away.”
Kat mentally tried to construct what Philip, the attorney who considered his oath a suggestion rather than a requirement, would do.
“Just a minute,” she said, and pulled out her cell phone. She listened to the ringing on the other end of the line. Finally, there was a click.
“Yeah,” the voice said. A chorus of coughing and gurgling noises followed.
Kat waited for him to finish. “Doc, it’s Kat,” she said when it was quiet. “I need a favor.”
“I don’t get out of bed for less than a thousand,” the raspy voice said, followed by a deep drawing sound for air.
She held the phone away from her ear. “It’s going to cost a thousand.”
“For both of you?”
“No.”
“Will he take Travelers Checques?”
“No.”
“Will you take Travelers Checques?”
“No.”
“They’re American Express,” Lessing said.
“I don’t care.”
Lessing resumed shuffling. Kat averted her eyes so that the penis was dancing in her peripheral vision. A miniature Slinky. She was tired of looking at it.
“Mr. Lessing?”
“Yeah?”
“Put your pants on…please.”
He looked down at himself and then swiped his pants up off the floor.
Kat got back on the phone. “You need to get out of bed.”
“If this needs a cleaner, it’s your problem.”
Kat glanced over at the unconscious woman. “I don’t think so.” She recited the address and hung up. Good God, I hope not.
