Series: Tucker Wayne #2
Former Army Ranger Tucker Wayne and his war dog Kane are thrust into a global conspiracy in this second Sigma Force spinoff adventure from #1 New York Times bestselling author James Rollins and Grant Blackwood.
Tucker Wayne's past and present collide when a former army colleague comes to him for help. She's on the run from brutal assassins hunting her and her son. To keep them safe, Tucker must discover who killed a brilliant young idealist-a crime that leads back to the most powerful figures in the U.S. government.
From the haunted swamplands of the deep South to the beachheads of a savage civil war in Trinidad, Tucker and his beloved war dog, Kane, must work together to discover the truth behind a mystery that dates back to World War II, involving the genius of a young code-breaker, Alan Turing...
They will be forced to break the law, expose national secrets, and risk everything to stop a madman determined to control the future of modern warfare for his own diabolical ends. But can Tucker and Kane withstand a force so indomitable that it threatens our future?
I have read a novel or two of James Rollins before War Hawk. I am a bit familiar with his writing. His writing is similar to Clive Cussler. His stories mostly involve a historical artifact or are spun from a historical event or person. His heroes are very skilled, smart and have the strength of a cavalry.
This is my first time to meet Tucker Wayne and Kane. This formidable and inseparable duo who act as a very fine tuned unit is very impressive. I love dogs and this story just strengthened my love and admiration for all dogs, whether they are domestic ones or war and military dogs just like Kane. I think dogs are the most empathic, smart and instinctive beings. They are truly man's best friend.
This story tackles a lot of very relevant concerns like the abuse and misuse of the internet and cyber technology. The impending future and doom of cyber and psychological warfare due to advanced technology and artificial intelligence. These are all very pressing issues that our world is facing today. Technology alone is not bad but there are always megalomaniacs and psychopaths whose selfish ambitions and desires use this advancement to the detriment and destruction of helpless people or an unsuspecting nation. We just hope that this story will not become a picture in real life. It would be too devastating and bleak to even contemplate.
Well, there is nothing much to be said about this book. Come on, it's James Rollins and Grant Blackwood. James Rollins is synonymous to impressive and adrenaline. As I said, this guy is in the same league as Clive Cussler, Steve Berry, and other great names in the thriller, suspense, and mystery genre. Their books are no longer to be reviewed but are to be savored with pleasure. Rollins has earned his laurels and has proven himself well beyond what was expected of him. Readers like me who are following him are reading his books because we want to know what other great and amazing stories he can concoct with that fascinating talent and brain of his. This is more of a thank you for people like him who never fail to surprise the readers with each new, unique and exhilarating story and for creating larger than life heroes.
Another subject that was made to light in this story was PTSD. Post-traumatic stress disorder. In this book, it was referred to as moral injury. It is the shattering of moral and ethical expectations and it can manifest as shame, guilt, anxiety, and anger, along with behavioral changes, such as alienation, withdrawal, and self-harming (including suicide). Do you remember the movie American Sniper? It was based on the real story of a Navy Seal sniper Chris Kyle who was to date hailed as the most skilled sniper that ever lived. Unfortunately, like most military veterans, he suffered from PTSD which later resulted to his death. He survived Iraq and met his very unfortunate demise when he was already in Texas. A lot of vets like Kyle is going through this moral injury and the least we can do is help them find their center again.
Do you still need to ask? Obviously, I give this book 5/5 military dogs. These furry heroes just like Kane are very instrumental in keeping the peace. These cuddly and loyal beings may have saved us from threats that we never know more than we can count. I salute all the military dogs and dog handlers. The work they do is very invaluable. Thank you, James Rollins and Grant Blackwood for writing this story and for letting us know the life and dangers faced by the brave and inseparable man-and-dog-unit. I salute you!
I am looking forward to reading more of Tucker and Kane's stories of survival, bravery, and heroism. Nice to meet you guys!
One did not rise high by ducking low. One had to be bold.
